Days after his goals powered Real Madrid to the La Liga title, Cristiano Ronaldo has seen his summer joy cut short following claims Spanish prosecutors are considering bringing charges against him onallegations of tax fraud.
Spanish media reports that the Real Madrid superstar had allegedly defrauded the authorities of 15 million euros ($16.7 million) between 2011 and 2014.Prosecutors said Thursday they have until the end of June to decide whether to charge the Real Madrid star with fraud, based on evidence from an investigation by tax officials.
Ronaldo, 32, is being accused of defrauding the taxman by hiding funds from his image rights andother endorsements through offshore accounts in the Virgin Islands.
The Portugal captain has denied the charges,although tax officials said he adjusted his tax declarations and paid an extra 6 million euros ($6.7 million) in 2014.
Ronaldo faces a prison sentence of at least 15 months if found guilty by a court, however, it would be unlikely he would go to jail as a first-time offender following Spanish law.
This comes after Spain’s Supreme Court confirmed a21-month jail term handed down last year to Lionel Messiand his father, Jorge who manages his finances.
Both men were convicted in 2016 of defrauding Spain of 4.1m euros (£3.5m) in taxes, but are unlikely to do jail time.
