Court Orders Remand of Chinese in Prison for Importing Fake Tyres

Two Chinese accused of importing fake and substandard tyres into the country will remain in prison while their bail application will be considered, a Federal High Court in Lagos ruled on Monday.
Tao Shen, 36, and Jing Yau, 22, were charged alongside, Chinedu Madubuike, and their companies Sino Nig. Import and Export and Nedeca International Ltd for importing the tyres which prosecutors say did not meet the required Nigeria industrial standard.Speaking through an interpreter, the Chinese pleaded not guilty to the charges.
According to Premium Times, the accused were said to have committed the offence in February by conspiring to import stuffing various sizes of tyres into one, knowing same to be in a dangerous state, or being injurious to human lives.The accused were said to have imported the tyreswhich did not comply with the mandatory Nigerian standard by stuffing different sizes into one, thereby, making the tyres to be unfit for its purpose.
The accused were alleged to have failed to furnish returns on the conditions of the imported tyres as required by law.
The offences contravened the provisions of Sections 320 and 510 of the Criminal Code Act, Cap C38, Laws of the Federation, 2004.They are also said to have contravened the provisions of Sections 26 and 32 of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) Act, No 14, Laws of the Federation, 2004.
The Nigerian government has vowed to come down heavily onimporters of fake tyres which have been responsible for a majority of road accidents in the country.
