Manchester United club captain Wanye Rooney netted for the 250th time in a United shirt against Stoke City on Saturday, surpassing Sir Bobby Charlton's total.
Wayne Rooney has become Manchester United's greatest goalscorer of all time by netting for the 250th time in the 1-1 draw against Stoke City in Saturday's Premier League encounter.
The 31-year-old scored in the 94th minute of the clash at the Britannia Stadium, lashing home a wonderful last-gasp free-kick to tie the scores as United looked destined for defeat.It took him past Sir Bobby Charlton's tally of 249, set between 1956 and 1973, with Rooney having reached the record in just 546 games for the club.
The goal also saw Rooney break Alan Shearer's recordfor the most scored away from home in Premier League history, moving him onto 88.
"Before him, the record belonged to a legend of English football.
Now Wayne becomes a legend of Manchester United.
Rooney tweeted: "Huge honour to become leading goalscorer for [Manchester United]. Thanks to [Sir Bobby]for his kind words after the game.
"Sir Bobby himself added: "I'd be lying to say I'm not disappointed to lose the record. However, I can honestly say I'm delighted for Wayne.
"Rooney also overtook Charlton to become England's all-time top scorer after netting his 50th goal for the Three Lions with an 84th-minute penalty in a 2-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win against Switzerland in September 2015.His international tally now stands on 53 from 119 caps, and he is closing on Peter Shilton's record of 125 appearances for his country.
