Louis van Gaal: Why I dropped Memphis Depay to Man Utd's Under-21s after Chelsea blunder

Depay found himself in the starting line-up for United's Under-21s game against Norwich on Monday evening, less than 24 hours after his blunder in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea. The Netherlands international lazily gave away possession during an attack at Stamford Bridge for the Blues to go up the other end and score a late equaliser.
But the 21-year-old showed his class inthe 7-0 demolition of Norwich and provided there assists, having only set up just five in 28 games for the first-team this term.
And Van Gaal, who signed Depay from PSV Eindhoven in the summer for £25million, admits he demoted the winger in order to raise his confidence“I think for him it was a very good matchas it could raise his confidence and I have seen the reaction of the fans," the Dutchman said of his decision."These fans are the real fans, those wholook to the second team, and they were very enthusiastic. He had three assists, but all his actions was very enthusiasticand it is also good for him.”.
