WAYNE ROONEY has been awarded a testimonial game by Manchester United – and will donate all the proceeds to charity.
Wayne Rooney has been out of form recently, but is still a legend at ManchesterUnited. The game, against as yet unnamed opponents, will be played as a season curtain-raiser at Old Trafford on August 3 next year when Rooney will be approaching his 12th anniversary of joining United from Everton for what eventually became a £27m fee.Rooney has since gone to play 493 games for United scoring 236 goals – 13 behind Sir Bobby Charlton’s club record - and been appointed captain for club and country.Apart from the match itself, further events are being planned with the Wayne Rooney Foundation distributing the profits to four charities, including the National Society forthe Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) which earlier this year appointed Rooney as its first Ambassador for Childhood following his work with and support for the national child protection organisation.
